: I walk at a local conservation area often, and in the spring I bring birdseed for the critters, many of whom will eat right out of your hand with only slight hesitation—more often with gusto! Mud Lake is abundant with wildlife—chickadees, turkeys, wood ducks, mallards, woodpeckers, nuthatches, squirrels, raccoons… There are always furry or feathered friends saying hello. A few years ago I was walking the trail when I met a mother and her young son. I offered him some seed, his eyes lighting up immediately and his little hand stretched out toward mine. His mother shot me a glare, brushed his hand away, and snapped back, “We don't FEED the wildlife.” I hold concerns about feeding wildlife with respect, though have often thought about what that moment could have been for the little boy—a wild bird landing on his hand. It’s tiny weight, the tickle of its little feet, and holding its trust, if only for a second. I believe moments of connection with other creatures—the kind that make children and adults alike be still with wonder—are a special kind of necessary magic that keep us, as humans, humble.Would love to hear your thoughts 🦆

Last week, my little Sketching Around Town class set up in the window at The Commons on Sparks Street in Ottawa—my friend Paul’s new coffee, beer + wine spot. Best seats in the house. We were practicing one- and two-point perspective, and I was humbled more than once. Knowing something in your head is very different from finding the words to help someone else understand it. I fumbled more than once. We leaned into each other, and all left with some pretty cool sketches. Urban sketching is meant to be loose, casual, and fun. Sometimes the teacher needs that reminder as much as the students.
There’s a bridge in Ottawa we walk under often, and every time we do the walls have changed. Street art we admired has been painted over. New pieces have appeared in their place. Sometimes it stings a little, our favourites gone without warning. But standing there this week, we noticed something that felt worth sharing—the art that hasn’t happened yet might become one of our favourites too, and that letting go makes room for new things to arrive. The art of impermanence… What do you see?
Today is my first-born’s 25th birthday. When he was seven, he made me a card from paper and pencil. On the front, “You are what you choose to be.” Inside, a paper flap that read, “Lift here,” and underneath, a piece of reflective foil card he’d found in the recycling bin. A mirror, with the words “You are this.” My seven year old was telling me I was enough. He has grown into one of the most resilient, tender-hearted humans I know. He has faced hard things—through doubt, insecurity, and fear—with courage I can only aspire to. He loves deeply, works with purpose, and has taught me things about determination and love that I couldn’t have learned any other way. So immensely proud of him, and even more grateful he chose me to be his Mom.Happy birthday, Sweetheart ❤️
